Martin Luther King, Jr. Day All People's Breakfast

When: Mon., Jan. 17, 8 a.m. 2011

The saying "one step forward, three steps back" can seem all too true in the face of racial intolerance, but our progress, however incremental, is still worth recognizing. One person who can speak from experience is Polly Baca, who will keynote the second annual MLK All People's Breakfast this morning. In 1978, Baca was the first Latina elected to the Colorado Senate; now, thanks to the recent appointment of Irene Aguilar, there are three, a development Baca has described as "just so historic that it's amazing." The event, which will also feature performances by gospel artist Rev. Dennis Mose and seminal Latin R&B band Tierra, gets underway at 8 at CC's Cornerstone Arts Center (825 N. Cascade Ave., coloradocollege.edu). Tickets are $7, with proceeds benefiting the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission Peace Scholarship.
