Manitou French Pastries
, a tiny Manitou Springs shop seems busy despite nearby roadwork. It’s no surprise they’ve been getting locals as regulars — this patisserie’s way up past the main drag. There’s no seating, so we build a picnic and make for Soda Springs Park, carrying a sizable mushroom-spinach-swiss quiche ($10), a ham and cheese croissant ($4.50), a raspberry galette ($6.75), a Hold Fast pour-over coffee ($4) and a cup of Paris import Kusmi tea ($2.50). The quiche is buttery, and though the faintly sweet crust feels a touch soft on the bottom, it holds up and tastes great. Crisp on the exterior, the croissant’s flaky and buttery within, rich with a little more chew than one would expect, fillings nicely proportioned. The sugar-studded pastry of the galette’s packed with vanilla bean-flecked custard and soft raspberries, its crust also buttery bliss. Given the sheer amount of butter and sugar involved, I have little time for bad pastry. But owner Nicholas Adkins doesn’t seem to sell that. Well done.
