Manitou considers mandatory bear-proof trash cans

Manitou Springs City Council was expected to decide whether to require bear-proof trash cans on Nov. 21, after Indyi's press time. The law would require trash be kept in specialized bins, or kept indoors until trash pickup day. Feeding wildlife, whether intentionally or otherwise, would also be prohibited (except bird feeders that are hung higher than bears' reach). Violators would be given a warning first, with opportunity to comply, after which they could be fined according to a graduated schedule (though, no more than $2,650 and/or no more than 90 days in jail).

The ordinance was developed in partnership with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Bear Smart Task Force, and is intended to keep bears away from humans. CPW was forced to euthanize 24 bears in the Pikes Peak region this summer because they lost their fear of humans.
