We’re craving Mexican, but we’re also craving something lighter and greener. So when we visit Mamitas, which recently stepped away from their 3 Margaritas franchise at the First & Main Town Center and rebranded, we skip tacos, enchiladas and a whole fried tilapia for the Ensalada Vallarta.
It comes with fish or shrimp, and we choose fish, getting a piece of fried-crispy tilapia topped with a mango dressing as the dish’s centerpiece. Tender, delicate flesh goes nicely with the bed of romaine and spinach beneath, savory on its own and sweetened by the mango dressing. Carrot and cabbage shreds help bulk out the greens, nearly overwhelming the plate on which it’s served. And while I’m happy with the intermingled diced tomato, I recognize that not everyone will enjoy diced raw onion in their salad.
Still, the slices of fresh mango, avocado and cucumber, plus fried tortilla strips at each corner of the plate, offer taste and textural variations. We’re left with no reason to regret ditching beans and rice for fruit and veg here.
