Love's labor

Nine months of pregnancy and the ordeal of labor are miraculous, exhilarating and exhausting. Many couples are solidly old-school when the big moment arrives, but some find outside-the-box approaches appealing.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word "childbirth"? I've given birth twice. Both experiences changed my life, amazed me, gave me an enormous sense of accomplishment. I absolutely loved them.

Describe the worst pregnancy story you've ever heard. I knew somebody who needed massive blood transfusions when her uterus tore, and bed rest for a long time afterwards.

Name three things you'd want in the room if you gave birth tomorrow. A shower to relax me and distract me from pain. Soft blankets. Someone who is actually supportive, instead of me having to take care of him.

What does childbirth make you think of? Long, long, long.

What's the best part of pregnancy? The end result.

And what's the worst part? Morning sickness, heartburn, awkwardness, lack of clothes.

What would you change about childbirth? The crappy gym mats they put you on during labor. Every bone in your body aches because those mattresses suck.

What's the worst pregnancy story you've heard? I know someone who had to do total bed rest the entire nine months.

What comes to mind when you hear the word "childbirth?" Drastic change.

What have you considered to be the worst part of pregnancy? Being unable to do some active things we enjoy — biking, for one.

Would you consider alternative childbirth methods? My wife did prenatal yoga and used breathing techniques during labor.

What's the worst childbirth story you've heard? A friend's baby was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around its neck, and she wasn't breathing. She ended up OK, but that was scary.

Name three things you'd want in the room if your wife gave birth tomorrow. An iPod, some water and a bouncy ball chair for my wife to sit on.
