Indeed, it's almost always a dry heat in Colorado Springs. So who would've guessed that while we were arranging to have a handful of sunbathing beauties on the cover of our annual Summer Preview (starting here), city movers and shakers would have rallied around ... swim caps?
We admit it: We didn't foresee the city and USA Swimming announcing that this area would soon bid for a Guinness World Record — the largest gathering of people wearing swim caps at one time. The event, scheduled for July 27 at America the Beautiful Park, will be part of the opening ceremonies for the Rocky Mountain State Games.
Peculiarity and blatant headline-grubbing aside, we'll take this opportunity to shine on a national level. Because as this preview shows, we do summer right.
From athletic events like the 34-sport State Games and the 90th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, to a gaggle of farmers markets and beer, wine and hot air balloon fests, Colorado Springs taps into what Mayor Steve Bach likes to call "the spirit of the Springs."
But back to July 27, where the first 5,000 individuals to show up will get a free swim cap for the big count.
If you're willing to smash your curls and sweat a bit under a bowl of soft plastic, you can do your part to make history and put this city on the map — at the expense of Tybee Island, Ga., and its 2,049 cap-wearers.
