Perhaps the most common misconception about the Independent is the size of our editorial staff. People see us keeping up with local news and politics, arts and entertainment, social issues and more — and they assume we must have a crew of 30, 40 or more doing the work.
In truth, our team of full-time, in-house writers and editors adds up to exactly 10. We also have invaluable contributors, from columnists to A&E freelancers, a part-time copy editor and interns. That's it.
As executive editor and one of those 10, I marvel constantly at what our group pulls off. In this issue, you'll see an interview with the headliners for Blues Under the Bridge, plus a piece on Buckwheat Zydeco and the ReVerb column by our music editor supreme, Bill Forman. You'll find our quarterly ReLeaf insert on medical marijuana organized by Bryce Crawford, along with his CannaBiz column, a restaurant review and the movie times and picks that he assembles. You'll read news stories from our three reporters who regularly battle the daily-cycle media competition. Plus all the other columns, listings and regular features.
And as you read this one, the next issue already is taking shape, with others in the writing forefront. That's how it works every week, thanks to a remarkable, dedicated staff that never lets up, knowing that 125,000 regular readers depend on us. That's all the challenge we need.
