Long story short



Two words: Harry Potter.

The first half of the final cinematic installment is finally here, and I, for one, will be at the 7 o'clock Potter Party at Cinemark Carefree Circle. (Take that, fool sucka' muggles.)

There couldn't be a more hyped offering to unofficially kick off this holiday film season, which MaryAnn Johanson breaks down for us. She's got the goods on Oscar contenders, blockbuster hopefuls and potential stinkers.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 obviously falls into the middle category, as Claire Swinford details how families come together around the book and film series in powerful ways — leading to serious anticipation for new releases.

Also in our Holiday Film Preview, Anne Lundeen examines why more Hollywood movies — whether blockbuster or time-waster — don't film here in Colorado. The answer may speak to why the Coen brothers' much-anticipated remake of True Grit, due out Dec. 22, didn't shoot in Ouray, like the original flick.

All in all, it's shaping up to be a surprisingly decent film season, meaning that when January comes, you'll probably have more to talk about than Friday's opening act. Well, at least those of you who can't make it to the Potter Party ...
