Long Story Short

Dr. Doug Weiss lives and practices in Colorado Springs, but he's no stranger to national media as president of the American Association for Sex Addiction Therapy. He's appeared on Oprah, Good Morning America and Dr. Phil, among other well-watched shows, to talk about his specialty, which is making news more and more these days.

Contacted this week about our cover story on sex addiction, Weiss had a ready answer when asked whether Tiger Woods is the most famous sex addict "poster child" yet.

"Uh, what about President Clinton?" Weiss said, realizing he wouldn't have to elaborate.

Weiss leaps at every chance to increase public awareness in all forms of sex addiction, from pornography to promiscuity. But he refuses to estimate the number of addicts, locally or nationally. (The National Council on Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity suggests 18 million to 24 million.)

Instead, Weiss says the numbers of people being treated in this area are much higher than 10 years ago, thanks to more support groups and therapists. He acknowledges "we have quite a few cases involving the military," but the heavy military presence "probably also makes the city look healthier than it really is."

Clearly, though, sex addiction is a worsening problem, Weiss says. Here and everywhere.
