Long Story Short

The Colorado Springs Independent strives to be a great newspaper for the entire Pikes Peak region.

Several years ago, we realized that we were not fully dialoguing and debating with two important local constituencies: the military and evangelicals. Accordingly, we organized three Fort Carson Expansion Town Hall Meetings to help our community and the military prepare for the tens of thousands of soldiers and family members expected to relocate here by 2014.

We also partnered with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs' Center for Homeland Security to bring Greg Mortenson, author of the bestselling Three Cups of Tea, to town to discuss how building co-ed, secular schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan helps build long-term security for our nation and the world.

This week, evangelist Richard Cizik and author Jim Hightower will visit and talk about how the faith-based and environmental communities can and must partner for the sake of our land, air and water. Please join us for this important conversation.

A final note: This week's Indy contains a Care and Share grocery bag. If you can, please fill it and return it to any local King Soopers. No family should go hungry in our town. If we all do a little, it will help a lot.
