Limber Grove Trailhead. The trail is to the right of the sign.
Bob Falcone
Once past the sign, look for the trail to make a sharp left and then cross 4 Mile Creek over this bridge.
Bob Falcone
Once over the bridge, make a right and then an immediate left on trail #648.

The trail is marked with these arrows or with colored diamonds.

At about .45 miles, the trail opens up into this large talus field. The trail is easy to follow, and it's also easy to lose your footing or roll an ankle. You'll be on this loose rock for about .3 miles
Bob Falcone
This rock field is what is known as "Limber Grove."

The trail is pretty easy after the rock field. At about 1.6 miles the trail ends at the corner of the Horseshoe Campground. Turn right here onto trail #691/Sheep Mountain Trail.

Trail 691 starts out easy...
Bob Falcone
For almost a mile, trail 691 is a relentless uphill climb, much of it through a drainage of fist sized rocks. At about 2.5 miles from the trailhead, turn left onto Trail #740/Sheep Mountain Interconnect. On my visit, trail 740 had been rerouted a short distance and was unmarked except for this unsigned post.
Bob Falcone
Trail #740 is a fairly easy hike, until just under 2.9 miles when it runs into this section of dead fall. The easiest way around it was to the left and then look for the trail on the opposite side of the gully.
Bob Falcone
After a short steep uphill after the dead fall area, the trail becomes fairly easy. At about 3.2 miles the trail hits the high point of the hike and then starts downhill. At around 3.8 miles the trail narrows for a bit and then at 4.4 miles, the trail meets Trail #689/Almgren Trail. Bear left here.
Bob Falcone
This part of the trail is fairly easy/moderate. At about 5.25 miles the trail makes a sharp right turn, at about at 5.5 miles the trail meets trail #660. Bear left and stay on #689.
Bob Falcone
At about 5.9 miles, bear left at this sign.
Bob Falcone
At about 6.2 miles, the trail meets the opposite corner of the Horseshoe Campground. Turn left here.
Bob Falcone
Follow the campground road for about .15 miles and when the road starts to bend around to the right, look for the start of the Limber Grove trail to the left. Turn right onto Limber Grove and return to the start of your hike, for a total distance of about 8.25 miles.
