ames Murphy is not to be trusted. In 2011, the LCD Soundsystem mastermind announced that his band’s Madison Square Garden gig was a “farewell show” and it sold out instantly. Earlier this year, the art-funk outfit announced a new album and reunion tour, joining a long list of acts — including The Who, The Eagles, Frank Sinatra, Phish, Mötley Crüe and Nine Inch Nails — who’ve greatly exaggerated the news of their own deaths. LCD keyboardist Nancy Whang admitted that, even back then, she “didn’t believe it for a second,” while Murphy is currently offering a variety of explanations, from cynical marketing ploy to fear of imminent artistic decline. Which was it? Given the masterful irony that pervades signature songs like “Losing My Edge” and “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House,” we’ll likely never know. It’s good to have them back.
