Laugh Clown Laugh

When: Fri., Jan. 3, 8 p.m. 2014

Before surround sound, CinemaScope, or even 3D glasses, there was the miracle of silent film. From the late 1890s until the Depression-era arrival of the "talkies," people flocked to theaters to see flickering black-and-white images with explanatory cue cards and live pipe-organ accompaniment — an experience the monthly Silent Film Friday series sets out to recreate. Due to renovations, tonight's screening will use pre-recorded music rather than live, but the chance to see Springs homeboy Lon Chaney's Laugh Clown Laugh in the Lon Chaney theater (221 E. Kiowa St., 8 p.m., $5 donation, 17-under free, 886-0088) is still tough to pass up. — Bill Forman
