As former President Bill Clinton so eloquently put it this week, the federal government, plain and simple, failed the hundreds of thousands of people affected by Hurricane Katrina.
While investigations are launched into the abysmal relief efforts, we applaud the ongoing critical and thorough coverage of the catastrophe by mainstream and alternative news organizations -- and urge people to continue to demand answers from Congress and the president while opening their hearts, homes and wallets to victims. (The Red Cross can be found at redcross.org; other local relief efforts, including benefit shows and other events, are listed in the Take Action section on page 7 and in Reverb on page 37.)
The following are some of the highlights -- and lowlights -- of the past week. Additional stories documenting previous warnings about serious problems with the Federal Emergency Management Agency can be accessed via the Independent's website at csindy.com.
