Johnny's Navajo Hogan
celebrates its 84th year in 2019. Currently owned by Johnny Nolan, also the owner of N3 Taphouse
, the spot remains a lively gathering place and venue for live music, an iconic landmark along a less-than-hopping stretch of north Nevada Avenue. We’ve had good experiences with the menu in the past, and that’s maintained with the side of sweet potato fries we order, which comes unseasoned with a little cup of marshmallow and caramel sauce, a sugary treat to be sure but perhaps a little too sweet for our appetites. That said, the fries themselves rate damn good. But things go off course with our pizza, a Ty’s Bomb. It’s topped with pepperoni, sausage, garlic and extra cheese, and with all that fat, the center of the crust sogs and suffers. The garlic and sausage are nice, but the pizza overall begs for some palate-cleansing element, something like a punchier pizza sauce or pickled peppers atop.
