Johnny Clegg

When: Tue., April 22 2014

Performing in a mixed-race band was illegal during South Africa's apartheid era, which made Juluka — the Johannesburg Afro-pop group fronted by Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu — an ongoing target for arrests and police beatings. Clegg's subsequent band Savuka, while still banned from radio back home, sold more than a million copies of its second album in France alone. The dynamic bandleader has since gone on to duet with Peter Gabriel and earn a Grammy nomination, while continuing to mix African rhythms, pop melodies and activist sentiments. Clegg and his band will perform an all-ages concert tonight at the Boulder Theater (2032 14th St., Boulder, Showtime is 8, with tickets starting at $25. — Bill Forman
