ome may still know Joey Bada$$ as Leon, the dreaded (in more ways than one) associate of Rami Malek’s character Elliot on Mr. Robot
. But that perception is rapidly changing. When you find yourself co-headlining Red Rocks just two albums into your career, it’s likely that hip-hop is a wiser career choice than acting, at least at this point in the game. Born Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott, the 24-year-old Brooklyn rapper saw his sophomore album All Amerikkkan Bada$$
debut at No. 5 on the Billboard charts two years ago. More recently, he and co-headliners Flatbush Zombies, along with a number of their current tour-mates, have joined forces in a sprawling supergroup called Beast Coast, who released their sinister debut single “Left Hand” last month, with a full-length album on the way. Given the rapper’s ability to craft lyrics as artfully polemical as Dead Prez, and stylistic influences that range from Erykah Badu to MF Doom, it would not be all that surprising to find him headlining Red Rocks on his own next year.
