This weekend, you can catch Itchy-O in a headlining role at the Gothic in celebration of their forthcoming From the Overflowing album on Jello Biafra’s Alternative Tentacles label, which is also home to fellow Denver eccentrics Slim Cessna’s Auto Club. Think of the self-described “masked and hive-minded” performance-art collective’s spectacle as a kind of ninja Cirque du Soleil, albeit with considerably higher decibels, far less pretense, and next to no acrobatics.
The group was also an unquestionable highlight at Denver’s inaugural Riot Fest a few years back, snaking their way through the concession-area crowd with a procession of elaborate Chinese lion dancers, battery-powered guitars, thunderous percussion, and flashing LED utility-belt synthesizers.
Put them in a theater, and you can expect all of the above, plus fog, glitter, strobe lights, mariachi uniforms, taiko drums, riot gear, vocoders, theremins and plenty of surprises. So if you’re up for an unforgettable evening of future-primitivism, avant-garde excess and flat-out fun, this one’s for you.
