International Watermedia XVI

When: Aug. 15-Oct. 17 2009

More often than not, watercolors are immediately recognizable as a medium: thick brush strokes, washed-out colors, a sort of euphoric quality granted to subject matter. But then along comes a painting you'd swear at first glance was done in oil or something else, and you say, "Damn — that's watercolor?" Well, at least three of us did exactly that while flipping through images for the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society's International Watermedia XVI, opened Saturday and running through Oct. 17 in Pueblo's Sangre de Cristo Arts Center (210 N. Santa Fe Ave., sdc-arts.org). Admission to the juried invitational costs $4. — Matthew Schniper
