- Logan and Laila Ireland will speak at Inside Out Youth Services' 2018 Ally Up! breakfast.
On Oct. 3, Inside Out Youth Services, our local LGBTQ youth center (and winner of an Indy Inclusion Legacy Award), will host its annual Ally Up! fundraising breakfast. This breakfast, which featured a speech by advocate Judy Shepard in 2017, brings together the LGBTQ and allied community to honor not only the 28-year-old organization’s continued work with our region’s youth, but also the speakers chosen to share their wisdom with Inside Out’s supporters.
This year’s keynote speakers will be Logan and Laila Ireland, two transgender military service members who appeared on The Ellen Show in 2017 to discuss President Trump’s controversial — and sudden — transgender military ban, which he first announced through Twitter, before sending an official memo to the Pentagon.
Since being introduced, the ban has faced a great deal of opposition, and so far four judges have refused to dissolve a preliminary injunction, which prevents the ban from going into effect until it makes its way through its legal challenges.
Plus, just last week BuzzFeed News unearthed emails from the day Trump announced the ban. These emails (frantically exchanged between officials at all levels of the government) illustrate that whole departments of people, even those Trump claimed to have consulted about the ban, were entirely caught off-guard by the president's tweets.
Given the recent news, and the ongoing fight to retain the rights of transgender people to serve in the military, the Irelands’ presence at the Ally Up! breakfast should prove thoughtful and enlightening, especially in our military town.
The breakfast is free to attend, though attendees are asked to register in advance, and make a contribution to Inside Out at the end of the event.
