The Colorado Springs Independent was honored last weekend with a first place award from the national Association of Alternative Newsweeklies in education writing. Competing with similarly-sized AAN-member newspapers from around the country, reporter Terje Langeland won the category for his Feb. 19 and Feb. 26, 2004 two-part series "Command Performance," which detailed the takeover of District 11, the city's largest public school district, by pro-voucher advocates.

Langeland also received an honorable mention in the investigative writing category for his Sept. 9 and Sept. 16, 2004 series "Honor Among Thieves," which detailed the activities of William Clary, a Texas entrepreneur who was the target of a federal investigation in connection with the 2001 collapse of a multimillion-dollar construction project at Fort Carson.
