Prosecutors and law enforcement officials announced on July 25 the indictment of 13 people associated with Hoppz' Cropz, a local head shop with two locations (on Hancock Expressway and East Boulder Street) known for "gifting" marijuana to customers who buy other items at an extreme markup (e.g., buy a $15 lighter and get a free gram of cannabis with it).
The 61-page indictment alleges Hoppz' Cropz's "gifting" program was a ruse to sell nearly 200 pounds of marijuana without paying licensure fees or taxes typically associated with retail marijuana sales. Such licensure is not available in Colorado Springs, but a new group wants to change that. See this story for more on the bust.
