Heritage Lecture: "Oil Sands"

When: Thu., July 15, 7-8:30 p.m. 2010

Talk about a timely speaking engagement: Against the backdrop of the BP Gulf disaster, Andrew Nikiforuk, author of Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent, will lecture from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Western Museum of Mining and Industry (225 Northgate Blvd., wmmi.org). Type "tar sands" into Google or YouTube and you'll find a mass of information on this Albertan blight that some call "the most destructive project on Earth." Nikiforuk's book became a Canadian bestseller, and he's also won environmental awards; tonight he'll speak for free, though the museum requests reservations at 488-0880 or rsvp@wmmi.org. — Matthew Schniper
