I seldom find time to consume games, but 3-year-old Heidi’s Sports Bar & Grill
reminds us of the charm of a neighborhood gathering spot for not just TV viewing, but darts, pool and on this weekend night, hosted Real Deal Poker tables. Outwardly friendly women and men of all age groups congregate and engage with us, seemingly happy for new faces on their turf, leaving us just as pumped to be there as they are. Alongside the requisite cheap beers, we find New Belgium’s Voodoo Ranger Juicy Haze IPA, an aptly named treat, and even a coveted seasonal can of Oskar Blues’ Death by Coconut, which I adore. And for classic bar food, the eats impress: Our spicy pulled pork sandwich delivers on heat-tangy flavor next to thick house-cut chips. And our Jalamango Burger comes juicy enough with a pineapple wheel atop and sappy fruit glaze, paired with crispy, heavily seasoned Cajun fries. Stickiness pervades and we slay napkins, but damn do we enjoy our time around all this local color.
