The first day of the new year belongs to teens, specifically those inclined to express themselves via spoken word. For today, from 4 to 6 p.m., and in a series of workshops to follow through March, Hear Here will develop 719's National Youth Poetry Slam Team. Each session will "help students become familiar with their own writing process and the style of slam, the dynamics of building a team, ultimately sharing their stories effectively in their writing and performance." In April, it will hold a final slam to select the team. It's free and open to all high-school-aged youths, and will be held at Cottonwood Center for the Arts (427 E. Colorado Ave.) Dates and details at tinyurl.com/pss2946. — Edie Adelstein
