Glen Phillips is best known as leader of the alt-rock band Toad the Wet Sprocket, whose platinum albums earned a following so loyal that, after a 15-year studio hiatus, they generated a quarter million in crowdfunding for their 2013 comeback album. Phillips, meanwhile, has put out no less than 10 solo releases, including the critically acclaimed Swallowed by the New, which will be re-released next month in a deluxe edition that includes a new single, “Nobody’s Gonna Get Hurt,” co-written by Lori McKenna. The album’s lyrics are, on balance, heavy yet hopeful, while the music often comes across as a cross between Paul Simon and, well, Toad the Wet Sprocket. Nothing wrong with that.
