len Phillips is best known as leader of the alt-rock band Toad the Wet Sprocket, whose platinum albums earned a following so loyal that, after a 15-year studio hiatus, they generated a quarter million in crowdfunding for their 2013 comeback album. Phillips, meanwhile, has put out no less than 10 solo releases, including the critically acclaimed Swallowed by the New
, which will be re-released next month in a deluxe edition that includes a new single, “Nobody’s Gonna Get Hurt,” co-written by Lori McKenna. The album’s lyrics are, on balance, heavy yet hopeful, while the music often comes across as a cross between Paul Simon and, well, Toad the Wet Sprocket. Nothing wrong with that.
