Ghost Bath

When: Tue., July 19 2016

North Dakota act Ghost Bath put themselves on the map last year by cleverly catfishing high-profile music critics into fawning over them as an "up-and-coming black metal band from bustling Chongqing." One Vox editor fell especially hard for the hoax, launching into a lengthy exegesis on the esoteric art of Asian metal, while scoffing at less-knowledgeable readers' ignorance of international music trends. ("If you're still surprised pop culture extended beyond London and New York, I suggest you Google 'the 21st Century.'") Meanwhile, Ghost Bath laughed all the way to a Nuclear Blast record contract, and not undeservedly so. While vocalist Dennis Mikula's wordless howling borders on hilarity, the band's music is bracingly melodic, with extended guitar crescendos and, on the nine-minute "Golden Number," an inexplicable two-minute piano outro. Is Ghost Bath entirely a put-on? Who can say? Does it matter? Most likely not. 7 p.m., Black Sheep, 2106 E. Platte Ave., $10/advance, $12/door, all-ages, blacksheeprocks, 227-7625. — Bill Forman
