Garry Winogrand: Women are Beautiful

When: Jan. 29-July 8 2012

It started with the Venus of Willendorf, an ancient carving of a robust, fertile woman. Thousands of years later, Botticelli painted "The Birth of Venus," elongated, pale and regal. Fast-forward to the 1960s and '70s, you get everyday women floating down streets, strolling in parks, laughing over ice cream cones — the subjects of noted photographer Garry Winogrand. His 35mm Leica captured impromptu moments highlighting women living in a world where their roles were changing drastically. They became the subjects of one of his greatest portfolios, Women Are Beautiful, prints of which are now on display at the Denver Art Museum (100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy., Denver, denverartmuseum.org). Culled from the DAM's own permanent collection, the exhibit of 50 photos opened Sunday and will be up through July 8. — Edie Adelstein
