Opened at the close of 2016, Fuji Bistro
’s a sharp space with an exceedingly warm staff. Its menu plays mostly Japanese with some Chinese and Thai plates. We split the difference, ordering a panang tofu hot wok ($12.95) and sushi roll combo (a value-packed $12 for three rolls, including miso soup and small salad). The curry arrives sizzling over a Sterno flame, boasting plump tofu triangles, zucchini cuts and thin potato wheels. We’ve ordered it medium spiced and it is, a touch sweet in the finish and plenty fragrant and satisfying. For beautifully presented rolls: The Philadelphia Roll’s smooth and rich from avocado and cream cheese, and distinguished by smoked salmon smoke essence; the swank and creamy mango avocado roll pops with the fresh fruit flavor and a mildly sweet sauce; and a veggie tempura roll shows off a bright orange core of starchy sweet potato and Japanese pumpkin with thickly battered asparagus. A pot of nutty bancha green tea offers balancing bitterness.
