Deborah Teske, artistic director of the Colorado Vocal Arts Ensemble (CVAE), founded that organization in 1992. Jan Johnson, director of the Ormao Dance Company, founded her company the same year.

For more than 10 years, the two women have bumped into each other around here, each time discussing a mutual desire to fuse the two organizations in a collaborative performance.

That common goal is finally coming to fruition.

With live a cappella choral music performed by the 25 professionally trained voices comprising CVAE, and the modern dancers of the Ormao Dance Company, the two groups will perform together in Fusion.

Nothing is more powerful as a dancer than to have live music, says Johnson. The energy is amazing, and it elevates the dancers desire to dance at a higher level.

Six different pieces, all created by different choreographers, will be performed while the choir sings on a balcony above the stage. Teske says the choir chose modern contemporary music that includes poetry and suggests a rhythmic dance movement.

Its beautiful music, Johnson adds. The kind that once you hear it, you dont forget it.

Johnson says the choreography is created through a humanistic approach, drawing upon the choreographers personal experiences and relating them to the audiences.

Our goal is to use dance as an art medium to reflect on modern culture and human experience, she says.

Johnson herself choreographed the closing piece to Eric Whitacres Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine, and explains that the song is influenced by Da Vinci and his obsession with man being able to fly.

Its amazing to see the different levels of interpretation to the music, she says, and to have them physically realized.
