Figure to Field: Mark Rothko in the 1940s

When: June 23-Sept. 29 2013

Much like its heralded Becoming Van Gogh exhibit, the Denver Art Museum's (100 W. 14th Avenue Pkwy., current show, Figure to Field: Mark Rothko in the 1940s illustrates one man's path into the art for which he's best known. Before those meditative colors, Rothko practiced partial abstraction and drew inspiration from myths. Like his contemporaries — Pollock, Motherwell and Still, also featured in the show — Rothko was working toward the simplest, purest form of personal expression. Figure to Field is up through Sept. 20 and is free for members, while $3 to $13 for others. — Edie Adelstein
