A bit of a dust-up arose when activist Betty Field, on Facebook, labeled the El Paso County GOP's Lincoln Day Dinner as "Republican Death for Profit," due to a plan to auction two AR-15 rifles to raise funds. The AR-15 was used in mass shootings in Las Vegas, Orlando, Newtown, Parkland and other places.
GOP executive Cassandra Sebastian reported Field's page to police, and police took no action other than "to offer support to be sure we had all the resources we needed to make the event safe for everyone," Sebastian says. The GOP long has auctioned off guns, she notes, and winning bidders undergo required background checks.
Says Field, "They're supposedly honoring fallen first responders at their event, and police officers have died because of weapons like the AR-15. So how in the world is putting a gun like that on the streets honoring those deaths?"
The dinner will be held at The Antlers hotel on May 12. Fields' group will demonstrate from across the street.
