Across the globe, countries from Iran to North Korea are developing their own nuclear technology for energy and for military purposes. In the United States, whose nuclear arsenal numbers approximately 10,000 weapons, we are warned that terrorists might use "dirty bombs" to inflict nuclear disaster. Moreover, the Bush administration has abandoned a hard stance on nonproliferation, so it can keep nuclear weapons as an option in the war on terrorism. In these post-Cold War times are nuclear weapons still necessary?
Jeanne Thomason - - The Housing Authority - - West Side - - How many nuclear weapons does the United States - have? Too many. I would guess [the number] is - ridiculous, something like 250 million. - - What purpose do nuclear weapons serve in this day - and age? From themselves. - - Do you think the United States can be a successful - leader in nuclear nonproliferation without doing more to - disarm its own nuclear stockpiles? No. We can't tell - somebody to do something that we won't do ourselves. - That's just insane.
