- The proposed plan for the Antlers Park site hit a speed bump.
An idea from hotelier Perry Sanders and a partner to build an 8,000-seat soccer stadium for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in Antlers Park behind Sanders’ Antlers Hotel got the heave-ho from the city for several reasons, including the park’s deed restrictions.
City officials favor a property commonly called City Gate, at Cimarron and Sierra Madre streets, but it’s adjacent to coal-burning Drake Power Plant.
While rumors are floating that a new site on the north end of America the Beautiful Park might be under study, City Council President Richard Skorman wouldn’t confirm that. “There’s a few legal hurdles that have to be worked out and if they’re not, there’s no point in moving forward,” he says of the mystery site. “I was told it would take two weeks to a month to really have the answers.”
The upside, Skorman says, is that Sanders’ proposal awakened the Council and mayor’s office to a need to address the neglected and trashy Antlers Park.
