When: Tue., July 9 2013

Dessa is the lone female member of Doomtree, which she described in an Indy interview as "some hybrid of a production house, a gang, and an independent music label." And while women are still underrepresented in hip-hop, as well as most other genres, the Minneapolis poet/emcee/songstress does more than her share to make up for that. Need proof? Listen to Dessa's just-released Parts of Speech album or, better yet, see her tonight at the all-ages Black Sheep (2106 E. Platte Ave., blacksheeprocks.com). Doors open at 7, and tickets are $10/advance, $12/door. — Bill Forman
