Consider the Source, with Smellblind, Thursday, April 12, 7 p.m., blacksheeprocks.com
What Consider the Source create onstage and in the studio — essentially an instrumental hodgepodge of melodic prog, world-music rhythms and jam-band excess — shouldn’t work nearly as well as it does. Throw a double-neck fretless guitar into the equation, and you’d be forgiven for not reaching the end of this sentence. It’s also true that a significant number of the NYC threesome’s guitar, bass and drum workouts seem to worship at the altar of early Yes, mid-period King Crimson, and just about any band Tony Levin has ever played in. But whether all that matches your definition of heaven or hell, the band’s sonic redemption is a dynamic and focused approach that suggests, if forced to choose, they’d prefer to spend eternity with Mogwai over the Dead. Spend 17 minutes with their live version of “So Say We All” and see if you agree.
