Colorado State Fair

When: Aug. 26-Sept. 5 2011

The world is full of fair snobs — fair, as in the Colorado State Fair (1001 Beulah Ave., Pueblo, coloradostatefair.com). Tell most people it's enjoyable, and they turn up their noses. Their loss. The fair actually is like stepping back in time, whether it's the midway with its rides and carnies, livestock and horse shows, or the exhibit halls, concession stands with fried everything (wonder if fried butter has made it here yet?) and nostalgic concerts. Your only choice early in the fair is Englebert Humperdinck on Wednesday, with the Beach Boys and Los Lobos on the final weekend. But who needs them? Just make the trip ($7 Monday through Thursday, $10 Friday through Sunday, parking $10 preferred or $7 south lot, concerts extra) and take in the culture of yesterday. When it's over, you might not be a fair snob anymore. — Ralph Routon
