Clarity Media acquires The Colorado Statesman as Gazette newsroom downsizes

Philip Anschutz-owned Clarity Media, which owns the Colorado Springs Gazette, has acquired The Colorado Statesman, a political newspaper published since 1898, the Gazette told readers on June 1. It will be combined with the Gazette's, which was started last year.

Clarity also owns several weeklies in Colorado Springs, and conservative publications including the Washington Examiner, the Weekly Standard and Red Alert Politics in Washington, D.C. A column in the June 5 Gazette said it also plans to publish a weekly statewide political magazine. The expansion comes as the Gazette downsizes its newsroom, laying off four in recent weeks while other staffers leave and aren't replaced.
