Circus comes to town

El Paso County's Board of Commissioners (BOCC) seems to attract a colorful array of eccentrics who keep the controversy fires well stoked. And we taxpayers reward them well -- $63,200 in salaries plus plenty of perks. By comparison, Colorado Springs City Council members make $6,250 a year. (For more, see the cover story beginning on page 15.)

Adolf Abercrombie - - Penrose Hospital area - - Retired engineer - - - - Why are members of the BOCC so colorful? Ask the voters. They put those crazies there. Voters seem to like candidates from out on the prairie. - - Which commissioner gives us the most entertainment for our tax dollar? Jim Bensberg, because he got caught. And Betty Beedy when she was there. But actually, it's not entertaining. It's like a Greek drama. - - Respond to this: Commissioner Douglas Bruce. Ship him back to California. The BOCC will become even more uncivilized. He's obsessed with TABOR. There is no civilization without taxation.

Doug Dawson - - Downtown - - Store assembler - - - - What in the world is going on at the county building? The right-wing, conservative establishment has this county in a lock. The BOCC is a puppet of the realtors and business interests. They don't have the people at heart. - - Why is the BOCC such a magnet for controversy? Colorado Springs is one the unique places in the country where Betty Beedy types can get elected. The people who tend most to vote here are the ones with far-out political agendas. - - Who is your favorite commissioner? None of the above. - - Is City Council underpaid or is the BOCC overpaid? Good question. It always amazes me how people go to such effort and expense to get elected to a job that pays [less than] $7,000 a year. - - Respond to this: Commissioner Douglas Bruce. A blight on the system. A slumlord who complains endlessly about legitimate tax issues.

Dona Reiley - - Just west of downtown - - Astrologer, psychic, medical transcriptionist - - - - What is it about the BOCC that makes for such craziness? Maybe they're not drinking enough water due to the drought and their electrolytes are low. - - Why is the BOCC so controversial so often? It reflects the character of El Paso County, which is conservative, individualistic, and believes in small government. - - Who is your favorite commissioner? Tom Huffman and Chuck Brown. They used legal means to finance the courthouse project, but the public thought they subverted the will of the people. They should have done a better job explaining their actions. - - Why do city councilpersons earn less than $7,000 a year and county commissioners get upwards of $70,000? It's just how the city and the county decided to do things. The BOCC probably doesn't deserve [it]. - - Respond to this: Commissioner Douglas Bruce. I support any political office Doug Bruce might hold. He's a voice of the people and he'll stop the government from sticking the tap into us and draining as much as it wants. He lacks social skills, but it's that very thing that's allowed him to bulldoze his agenda forward, which has been a blessing to the people of Colorado.
