arlier this month, Chicago-based songstress Circuit des Yeux posted on Twitter about one of her formative experiences growing up in Lafayette, Indiana. “Remember choosing Sun Ra for a speech assignment on a public figure [during] Freshman Year,” she wrote. “Once I started talking about time travel & how the end of the world already happened, my teacher asked me to take a seat. Got a D+” These days, the artist formerly known as Haley Fohr is scoring much higher grades, thanks to her ever-deepening baritone, artful songwriting, and drone-driven arrangements that call to mind Velvet Underground chanteuse Nico and art-rock singer Annette Peacock, and even has traces of early-period Tim Buckley. In a review of her recently released, electronically enhanced Reaching for Indigo
music reviewer Loring Wirbel described Circuit des Yeux as “Nina Simone on acid,”
an apt description for an artist who, after releasing six albums while still in her 20s, is only beginning to get the attention she deserves.
