Midnight Movies, Hellraiser and Elvis

Elvis: #1 Hit Performances (NR) - RCA - Last Halloween, my daughter dressed in a bejeweled and big-haired Elvis costume. We figured she'd get a few laughs, but instead she was greeted with shouts of "Elvis!" everywhere she went. Her tiny taste of celebrity confirmed for me that the legend lives on. This new collection brings together 15 of the performances that created the King, along with two bonus press conferences. Though these appearances may not be new to hardcore Elvis collectors, more recent or casual fans will find they offer a satisfying overview of his musical career. They include TV clips (like his censored Ed Sullivan appearance), movie highlights from the '60s and the best of his '70s Vegas spectaculars. See for yourself why the girls screamed. Hear why the songs hit No. 1. And learn why he's still a sensation after more than 50 years. Jill Thomas

Hellraiser: 20th Anniversary Edition (R) - Anchor Bay Entertainment - Clive Barker's infernal creation, Pinhead, the Cenobite angel from hell who takes great pleasures in your pain, has, in the past 20 years, become an icon of modern horror, right up there with Freddy, Jason and Michael. He was first brought to the screen in 1987's Hellraiser, even though he was a mere peripheral character. Called from hell via an incomprehensible puzzle box, Pinhead and his gang are looking for sleazy Uncle Frank, who escaped from their hooks and has convinced his frigid sister-in-law to help him get some extra skin to complete the process. It's very gory, vaguely S&M-inclined and supremely goofy when viewed 20 years later, but, as the DVD's comprehensive documentaries show, it was quite ahead of its time, ushering in a Satanic sense of dread to the horror films that came after it. Midnight Movies: From the Margin to the Mainstream (NR) - Starz Home Entertainment / Release date: Nov. 13 - Midnight Movies is a wholly entertaining history (and primer, for the most part) of the trend that took '70s cinema by storm. It focuses on the films that shook the foundations of moviegoing: Alexandro Jodorowsky's Spaghetti Western, El Topo; John Waters' salute to bad taste, Pink Flamingos; George Romero's iconic and total revitalization of the horror film, Night of the Living Dead; the reggae-drenched guns-and-gangsters drama, The Harder They Come; the "queen" of all midnight movies, The Rocky Horror Picture Show; and the film that destroyed the genre by being completely nihilistic, David Lynch's Eraserhead. Told by the actual filmmakers and film historians, this documentary is a marvelous throwback to a time when communal cinema was the order of the day. Louis Fowler
