- Chuck Prophet & The Mission Express @ MeadowGrass Music Festival, Sunday, May 26, 6:30 p.m., La Foret Concert & Retreat Center, 6145 Shoup Road, full festival schedule and ticket info at meadowgrass.org
If you see just one act during this year’s MeadowGrass Festival — which would admittedly be a weird thing to do — make it Chuck Prophet. He and his band can, in their best moments, hit a level of pop perfection rivaling Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Prophet has been at it since the early ‘90s, when he relinquished his role as killer lead guitarist and co-writer in Green on Red to pursue a solo career. His most recent album Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins — which he’s described as “California Noir” — is a collection of rock ’n’ roll character studies, both real and imagined, that rank among his best.
But it’s in a live band setting that Prophet shines brightest, in a dark kind of way, channeling the energy that fueled Green on Red’s barroom-drawl Americana into something less predictable and ultimately more compelling.
