For fans of Ozomatli, the new “Libertad” single is a milestone release, marking the L.A. hip-hop collective’s first studio collaboration with Jurassic 5 members Chali 2na and Cut Chemist since their 1998 debut album. Out on the road, though, the artists have fallen back out of sync, with Chali and Cut making their way to Colorado a week after Ozomatli has already come through. On the plus side, that gives followers a second opportunity to experience the new song live. “If you can withstand / This negative quicksand / Then let this be the theme song / Of the resistance,” intones Chali in the distinctive baritone that made him stand out on J5 albums. The charismatic rapper can also be heard on Cut Chemist’s 2018 Die Cut album, which finds the deejay/producer augmenting his impressive scratching and sampling abilities within more “songwriterly structured” arrangements. In addition to a collaborative performance by the duo, the evening will feature opening sets by Denver and Fort Collins hip-hop acts.
