Visiting 13 Trees Coffee's kiosk feels partly like a science lab tour. Roaster/barista William Brewer (no joke) utilizes a row of siphon brewers, set aboil from underlying heat lamps, forcing water up from the bulb into the hopper, where coffee grounds steep. We watch him meticulously toil, even hand-frothing our house creamer (a mix of whole and condensed milk) with a French press. His claim to fame: beans infused with butter (and CBD, if you wish) during the roasting process, resulting in a richer (yes, buttery) mouthfeel, like a bulletproof coffee. It delivers 35 mg CBD per cup ($9 with CBD; $6 without), he insists, showing us his lab results, to prove the flavorless CBD isolate comes through. Brewer doesn't do espresso drinks, just these buttered coffees (even a vegan version), with flavor options. Neither our caramel nor honey show up strong, leaving the buttery element to fold smoothly into a Colombian roast's chocolate essence. The CBD does seem to mitigate the caffeine buzz.
