Caustic wastewater byproduct from Pueblo Chemical Depot's neutralization of mustard agent will be shipped out of state, the plant said in a July 28 release. The shipments, via tanker truck, will be temporary until systems in the disposal plant catch up with processing. Up to 250,000 gallons of hydrolysate will be sent to a waste incinerator in Port Arthur, Texas, for treatment and disposal.
The plant is working with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Colorado Chemical Demilitarization Citizens' Advisory Commission, the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot and a host of state and county groups to devise a plan to use up to three trucks per day in a convoy over a 30-day period. The shipments were to begin July 31.
"While we are confident in the safe and successful accomplishment of this limited mission, I again want to assure you that this is not expected to become standard practice," the release said.
