Buying the presidency

Buying the presidency George W. Bush is well on his way of raising a whopping $200 million in his re-election bid, which includes a cool $10 mil alone for his most recent TV advertising campaign to portray his Democratic rival as being soft on national security. This week, the Rocky Mountain News reported that Coloradans have so far ponied up $1.8 million for Bush, compared with $500,000 for Kerry.

Geoff Pickman - - Wahsatch and Boulder area - - Colorado College custodian - - - - What do you think about Bush's plan to spend $200 million to get re-elected? If ya gotta spend that much to get re-elected, something's wrong. - - How much should a presidential campaign cost? It's very hard to say. It changes with the economy. - - Do you think that campaigns should be fully supported by the government? If it's funded through private companies then it's only done to further their interests. If they are funded through taxing the public it's a good deal. Hopefully we'd have more say on what they're spending our money on. - - If you were to make a TV commercial, whom would you attack and what would your message be? I'd be attacking Bush right now and try to find out what he's trying to do and what is actually going on over there in Iraq. We went there first of all because of all these missiles. Now we are rebuilding Iraq. I don't have a problem with that, but let's address the main issue of why we went over there.

Rob Campella - - North East - - Retired - - - - What do you think about Bush's plan to spend $200 million to get re-elected? Terrible. I think it's crazy that they have to spend that much money. - - How much should a presidential campaign cost? I don't know. - - Do you think that campaigns should be fully supported by the government? I think it's a good idea. They used to have a system where you paid one dollar on your income tax, maybe now up to five dollars. - - If you were to make a TV commercial, whom would you attack and what would your message be? I'd be criticizing Ralph Nader for getting in the race. I think that the war is a major issue and I'm concerned that the casualties are piling up. I'm very concerned about the social situation in America. I think the money that they are spending in Iraq should be spent in America as the country is underfunded in education and healthcare.

Agnes Fitch - - Downtown - - Retired nurse - - - - What do you think about Bush's plan to spend $200 million to get re-elected? I hope that the Democrats raise an equal amount. But I don't think its fair to spend that much money on elections. - - How much should a presidential campaign cost? There needs to be a reform on election spending, maybe a dollar per taxpayer and divided equally. - - Do you think that campaigns should be fully supported by the government? Yes, once it gets to this point we need to contribute through a tax fund. - - If you were to make a TV commercial, whom would you attack and what would your message be? We need to work for more peace internationally. The current administration has alienated so many other countries.
