, I discover a new cooler devoted to this boozy Denver-made ice cream from Bootleg Creamery
. Irish Coffee and Maple Bourbon pints ($7.50) end up in my hands. They melt quickly when out of the freezer, due to their 6.25-percent ABV I’m guessing. The latter bears a boozy bourbon backbone and smooth maple tone, as expected, plenty lavish. The Irish Coffee impresses us more, not as overtly hooch-forward, more java dominant with an Irish cream lead and whiskey essence and bits of cookie crumble. Both pose a binge risk, and therein lies my main complaint: excessive sugar, 40 grams in 4 ounces (one serving), so 160 grams/pint, which you know many have consumed in one sitting. (The World Health Organization advises 25g a day, max.) Bootleg’s website mentions “premium ingredients,” which caramel coloring and polysorbate 80 aren’t. My vote: Add a spoonful or two to coffee, or buy a more modestly sweet ice cream and add your own spirits atop.
