I pull into Blue Mountain Creamery because I’m wondering what happened to Glacier Homemade Ice Cream and Gelato, formerly in the spot. An employee tells me I’m essentially still standing in Glacier, in that little has changed other than signage and the name, as the ownership has broken away from its Boulder-born franchise after seven years. But a wide array of gelato and ice creams are still made daily in-house.

So, story in hand, I reward my effort with a treat. The affogato ($3.25/4 ounces) catches my eye, made with local Ümpire Estate espresso. All I have to decide on is an ice cream or gelato to pair. Deeply dark, muddy-looking bittersweet chocolate gelato grabs my attention — how could this go wrong when it feels so right? — and into a mini mug it goes. The gelato sweats its cacao richness into the potent shot, delivering splendor with each spoonful. It’s gone too quick, but my day’s improved.
