Women's groups are asking (or perhaps that should be demanding) CBS to reverse its plans to air pro-life ads bought by Focus on the Family and featuring Florida football star Tim Tebow during the network's Super Bowl coverage on Feb. 7.
According to an Associated Press report out of New York, several organizations are protesting the planned ads. One leader, Jemhu Greene of the Women's Media Center, said, "An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year — an event designed to bring Americans together."
Other groups supporting the message against the ad include the National Organization for Women.
The AP story said CBS already has given the go-ahead to the Focus ad's script, which reportedly will describe how Tebow's mother, Pam, had pregnancy complications before Tim Tebow was born. Doctors urged her to have an abortion, but she refused.
Tim Tebow won college football's Heisman Trophy as a sophomore and helped lead Florida to two national championships. The quarterback, now preparing to play Saturday in the Senior Bowl all-star game, told media: "I know some people won't agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe."
Focus spokesman Gary Schneeberger was quoted by AP as saying the Springs-based organization's leaders were "a little surprised" at the controversy, adding, "Those who oppose it will be quite surprised at what the ad is all about."
