Ballet Hispanico

When: Tue., Sept. 27, 7:30 p.m. 2011

Earlier this year, New York Times dance writer Roslyn Sulcas wrote, "When a dance company's identity is predicated on its national or ethnic identity, the choreographic traps it can fall into are precipitous and deep." She was talking about companies like Ballet Hispanico, a Manhattan organization that aims to uphold Latino culture through dance. Yet since its inception in the 1970s, BH has done well for itself, earning cultural honors and expanding to form a school and several outreach programs. The company will perform at 7:30 tonight at Sangre de Cristo Arts Center (210 N. Santa Fe Ave., Pueblo, sdc-arts.org/centerstage.html) for $25 tickets. From the looks of the video embedded on Sangre's site, it should be a great show no matter what. — Edie Adelstein
